Biography
Luis Codera Puzo (Barcelona, 1981) is a composer, cultural manager, and performer of modular synthesizers and electric guitar.
Codera Puzo has stood out for his active involvement in the use and performance of modular synthesizers, for which he has created various compositions, studies, and writings. His instrumental technique, focused on performativity and precise interaction with other musicians, has allowed him to compose works such as MUR#03, one of the first concerts for modular synthesizer and orchestra, premiered by the OBC (Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya, and the piece Compression Music for synthesizers and amplified ensemble, created with support from the Leonardo Grants of the BBVA Foundation.
In his continuously evolving career, acoustic music has also been significant, aimed at clarity and the unequivocal expression of ideas as tools to explore unique proposals. Works such as Code is poetry (premiered by the Quatuor Diotima) employ unisons, repeated notes, and monolithic writing to leave space for listening and to highlight aspects normally less perceptible, such as the vibrato of the instruments.
His musical training began autodidactically; he later studied piano, electric guitar, percussion, and trombone, covering a wide range of musical styles and interests, before focusing on composition at ESMUC in Barcelona and at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe.
His career highlights include the Composition Prize from the Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung and a residency as guest composer at L’Auditori de Barcelona in 2017. His music has been performed in venues and festivals worldwide by ensembles such as Klangforum Wien, Ensemble Modern, Ensemble intercontemporain, and ensemble recherche, among many others. He has released recordings on Col legno and Neu Records.
Valuing the importance of listening and collaboration in the artistic community, he has devoted much of his work to supporting the music of others, as well as programming and cultural management. He has played a key role in renewing the new music scene in Barcelona, organizing and advising on more than one hundred concerts, sound experiences, and commissions to creators. Among his most notable projects are the founding and direction of the ensemble CrossingLines and the OUT·SIDE cycle of unusual music in contemporary art centers, with special attention to artistic coherence and ensuring fair working conditions. Currently, Codera Puzo serves as strategic and management advisor for the FRAMES Percussion group, contributing to its consolidation as a leading ensemble in Spanish contemporary music, recently awarded the Ensemble Prize from the Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung.
Codera Puzo has taught classes and given lectures at institutions such as the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg, Musikene, Taller de Músics Escola Superior d’Estudis Musicals, ESMUC, the Centre Superior Conservatori del Liceu, the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid, the Mallorca Summer Academy, and the II Jornadas de Sonología de Córdoba.
